WASHINGTON, U.S. - Frustrated at the healthcare failure and the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s statement of Trump having “excessive expectations” - Trump fired back at McConnell on Thursday.
Trump fired back at McConnell for saying the president had “excessive expectations” about advancing his agenda through Congress.
The President took to Twitter and said, “Senator Mitch McConnell said I had ‘excessive expectations,’ but I don't think so. After 7 years of hearing Repeal & Replace, why not done?”
Following the tweet, on Thursday morning, Trump expressed disbelief in McConnell’s inability to pass a healthcare bill through the Republican-controlled Senate.
He tweeted, “Can you believe that Mitch McConnell, who has screamed Repeal & Replace for 7 years, couldn't get it done.”
The White House too acknowledged “frustration” with McConnell, with President Trump’s top spokesman not downplaying his public spat with McConnell and saying “there some frustration” with the Kentucky Republican.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters in New Jersey, “You can see the president’s tweets. Obviously there’s some frustration. I don’t have anything more to add.”
Sanders also confirmed that Trump and McConnell spoke by phone on Wednesday before the president fired off his tweets.
She said, “I’m not aware of how long. Healthcare was certainly discussed.”
Trump’s criticism of McConnell has indicated the growing intraparty rift between the White House and Capitol Hill that is bound to endanger the Republicans' shared agenda in the fall.
The tensions came to light weeks back, when McConnell criticized Trump for setting “artificial deadlines” in the healthcare push.
During a speech in Kentucky, the Senate leader said, “Now our new president has of course not been in this line of work before. And I think had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process. And so, part of the reason I think people feel like we’re underperforming is because too many artificial deadlines unrelated to the reality and the complexity of legislature may not have been fully understood.”
Many analysts have expressed shock that Trump chose to publicly attack McConnell as the Senate leader will be responsible for moving much of his agenda this fall.
