Tommy Gainey grabs early lead at Puerto Rico Open

Tommy Gainey birdied five of his last seven holes Thursday to grab a one-shot lead after the first round of the Puerto Rico Open.

Gainey carded a 7-under 65 to finish one stroke ahead of seven players at the Grand Reserve Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

The group at 6 under includes Puerto Rico native Rafa Campos and Australia's Greg Chalmers, who aced the 235-yard par-3 eighth hole. Robert Garrigus, Lee Hodges, Brandon Wu, Taylor Pendrith of Canada and Fabian Gomez of Argentina also shot 66.

Gainey, 45, offset two bogeys with nine birdies while posting his lowest score on the PGA Tour since the 2019 Barbasol Championship. His only win on the PGA Tour came at the 2012 McGladrey Classic.
