German sixth seed Tatjana Maria wrapped up a 6-4, 6-2 win in the first round over Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez on a rain-interrupted day in Mexico.
A rain delay concluded early Tuesday evening, which allowed Canadian Marina Stakusic to complete a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Russia's Polina Kudermetova. Of the other six matches, only one had gotten underway, as France's Elsa Jacquemot won her first set against Greece's Maria Sakkari 6-2.
Upcoming matches at the WTA 500-level event included No. 5 seed Magda Linette against Colombia's Emiliana Arango and Sloane Stephens against Italy's Lucrezia Stefanini.
